This work focuses on fermentation as a process of time and on the accumulation of time in a town shaped by a soy sauce brewery that had continued since the Edo period.
In soy sauce production, fermentation takes place slowly through the activity of microorganisms, forming flavor and quality over time through changes that are not always visible. In a similar way, the town itself can be seen as something that has matured through the accumulation of people’s lives. That accumulation includes not only what has actually happened, but also unrealized choices and possible futures that never came into being.
What exists here now is not simply part of the present, but something that appears temporarily within a much longer span of time. These things may one day be found again as traces of the past.
"Up to the present" considers the present as a passing point, and reflects on how things and places appear and are later rediscovered within a much longer, aeonic sense of time.
